There is a growing and well-documented body of evidence supporting this initial report, including the recognition that perinatal mental ill health has the capacity to influence the development of the parent/infant relationship, and can have a profound effect on the health of the child’s emotional, psychological, social and cognitive development. Consequently services that are developed to address these difficulties must include a range of health professionals including those trained to work with the infant as well as the parent, and with the relationship that enfolds between the parent and infant. It is important in workforce planning to include professionals who are specifically trained to work in this area, e.g. parent/infant and child psychotherapists, and other professionals who may acquire these skills through additional training.
